Flight 93 Memorial News

Huge U.S. Flag Returns to PA
In 1994, the Somerset Flag Committee put up a 120-foot flagpole at
215 Ramada Road in Somerset, PA. For years, from the pole flew a
1,800-square-foot American flag, intended to honor Somerset County
veterans.
Over the years, the weather took its toll on the flag, which frayed and
faded. The flag’s Committee disintegrated too. As of June 13, 2009, no
flag had flown on the site for almost two years.
That all changed this Flag Day, June 14, 2009, when the rejuvenated
Somerset Flag Committee raised a new flag at the site. The flag was
rededicated in a special ceremony. Now the flag flies in honor of the
veterans of Somerset County. The flagpole was dedicated to honor
the crew and passengers of United Flight 93. A new granite marker
was added to the site to honor the heroic actions of those onboard
the flight on September 11, 2001.
The new Somerset Flag Committee is determined to keep this flag
flying. The flag weighs 85 pounds and costs between $1,100 and
$3,500. The area of the flag nearly equals the square footage
of the average U.S. house in 1988. Wind and weather will soon
take its toll on this flag too. Though there have been many
contributions from around the country, the committee has not
reached its goal of $50,000.
