Flight 93 Memorial News

Children’s Peace Garden Dedication
Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 1:00pm,
Shanksville, PA
The Children’s Peace  Garden was dedicated in a public ceremony on
Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania’s Garden Club Federation, a group of state and local garden
clubs, built the small garden of trees and flowers in 2002 as a contemplative
space for visitors  to the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel, located several miles
from the crash site.
“The Children’s Peace Garden is to honor the memory of Flight 93,” said Jane
Sotomayor, a member of the Somerset Garden Club, caretakers of the Peace
Garden.  It’s also for “the children of the future in the hope they will find
peace and  not war or violence,” she said.
The ceremony will include a performance by Somerset County Roof Garden
Barbershop Chorus. United Airlines retirees and members of local, state and
regional  garden clubs are expected to attend.
Rev. Alphonse T. Mascherino, chapel director, said, “To me it’s so exciting to
see how generous people are. The garden club has been at it since 2002.
This is a triumph for them.”
The forty brave crew and passengers of Flight 93 brought the plane down
over Shanksville, preventing the terrorists from reaching their
Washington, DC  target on September 11, 2001.
