Fundraiser for Beyond the 11th

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Cocktail Reception 6:30pm
Screening of Beyond Belief at 7:30pm

Q&A to follow the film

Ambler, PA

Susan Zalesne Retik was widowed on September 11, 2001 (her husband, David Retik, was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11). She writes:
September 11th changed the world, and, of course, changed me. Although I was reeling from the tragedy, on some level I began to realize how lucky I am. My friends and family and even strangers helped me and my family in every conceivable way. They brought meals, wrote notes of support, made handmade quilts, etc. As the U.S. prepared to invade Afghanistan, I began to learn more and more about that country. Television images of women covered from head to toe in burquas haunted me, and learning that women were not allowed to work and girls were not allowed to go to school had a profound effect on me. I remember thinking how paralyzing it must be to be a woman living in Afghanistan, and then trying to imagine the unimaginable -- "What must it be like to be a widow?" That was how the idea of Beyond the 11th came to be.
The film Beyond Belief tells the story of Susan and her work with Beyond the 11th and her journey to Afghanistan.

Ambler Movie Theatre

"Freedom Run" to Benefit 9/11 Responders Motorcycle Ride

Liberty State Park, 11:00am

Saturday, May 10, 2008

2,000 motorcycles are anticipated to stretch for five miles and will pay tribute to the 9/11 first responders who are now gravely ill as a result of their service at the site of the World Trade Center collapse.

Leading the motorcycles will be FDNY Engine 343, named in honor of the 343 NYC firefighters who perished in the attacks, which will be ridden by rescue workers and first responders.

The run will depart from the Hackensack Court House, 10 Main Street, at 11:00am, and travel across the George Washington Bridge before passing the World Trade Center site. At the site, motorcyclists will pay homage to a police and fire department color guard before proceeding through the Holland Tunnel and out to Liberty Island.

They’ll arrive at Liberty State Park at roughly 1:30 and take part in a festival of food, live music by The Rolling Bones, motorcycle high wire thrill show, a fly-over by the War Birds historic military aircraft, and more.

Liz DiGennaro of Bergen Harley-Davidson-Buell, sponsor of the event, says, "We hope it will bring attention to the real American heroes who spent days and months sifting through the rubble of the burning buildings looking for survivors and bringing dignity to those who perished."

The police-escorted run and festival are free and all models of bikes are welcome. For more information or to register, call 201-843-6930 or visit http://www.FealGoodFoundation.com.
